Hi, I’m Ian Robertson Kibbe, a mixed race storyteller raised on rap, PBS, and Jamaican beef patties. I’m an award-winning filmmaker, writer, and musician who believes in humor and heartache in equal measure, and I’m a Senior Staff Producer at Kartemquin Films.
I’ve worn a lot of hats, including editor, DP, producer, and Creative Director at Fungi Media, and that hands-on experience keeps me close to the heart of the work, whether I’m documenting a dog hotel owner in Spain or a factory in California. I’ve made work with Kartemquin Films, PBS, NPR, The Onion, Gatorade, and Time Magazine, and I’m drawn to stories that mix joy, complexity, and a little chaos.
I produced Raising Bertie, directed by Margaret Byrne and executive produced by Gordon Quinn, Justine Nagan, and J. Cole, and Greener Pastures, directed by Sam Mirpoorian. Greener Pastures won the Grand Jury Prize at Mountainfilm and an Emmy Academy Honors Award. The two films premiered and played at festivals including Full Frame, and aired nationally on PBS’s POV and Independent Lens.
Growing up navigating multiple identities made me partial to stories that live in the in between, the ones that confront power and make room for contradiction.
I was also a founding member of The Flavor Savers, a comedy, rap, and dance group known for chaotic live shows, mesh tank tops, and a deep love of a good bass drop. We played Bonnaroo, opened for Usher and John Oates, and once made a fake workout video that somehow made people cry.
